Enigmatic Caro-Kann by GM Miguel Santos

The Caro-Kann is one of the most solid openings against 1.e4. If I had to highlight its main virtues, they would be:

• Less well-known than other openings like 1…e5, 1…c5, or 1…e6.
• Very comfortable to play: Being strategically solid, it offers healthy and easy-to-handle positions.
• Ideal for playing for a win: The pawn structures reached provide good opportunities to develop dynamic plans and seize the initiative. Firouzja, for example, used it as his main repertoire to climb from 2600 to 2800 Elo.

In short, it is an opening that fulfills everything we can ask for and requires much less effort to learn compared to others. I myself am going to include it in my repertoire, so you’ll be seeing me play it a lot!
