The Ruy Lopez also known as The Spanish is a chess opening characterized by the moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5. Named for a 16th century bishop Ruy Lopez de Segura. The Ruy Lopez has such a vast number of variations that in the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (ECO) all codes from C60 to C99 are assigned to them. Here Bryan goes over the variations for White.
GM Bryan Smith grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and now resides in Philidelphia, PA. His accomplishments include first in the 2008 National Chess Congress, first place in the 2006 U.S. Masters and first place in the 2008 King’s Island Open, including many other Grand Prix tournaments. Bryan was on the national champion UMBC chess team from 1999 until 2001. Bryan is the highest rated player ever from Alaska. He became a Grandmaster in 2013.
