FM Dalton Perrine’s French: Simplified gives you a solid, easy-to-understand repertoire that will help you handle anything a 1. e4 player will throw at you.

The French Defense allows you to immediately fight for the center and FM Perrine offers simple solutions to each of white’s main options: after the moves 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5…

3. Nc3 & 3. Nd2 are dealt with in the same way – you’ll take on e4 and develop your bishop to d7.

This approach saves you a TON of time by giving you the option to deal with two of White’s mainlines with one solution. The Fort Knox variation helps you deal with a well-known problem in the French – the light-squared bishop. You’ll develop it quickly to c6 and save yourself a traditional headache of French players.

Against 3. e5 (the Advance variation) , you’ll employ a similar approach.

Your problem bishop will soon be traded on b5, leaving the way open to develop the rest of your pieces harmoniously.
