The Killer Barry Attack is an under-the-radar, aggressive, and sound addition to your repertoire repertoire that aims to strike at Black’s favorite fianchetto setups – the Grünfeld and the King’s Indian.

You will have opponents unsure of what to do while you quickly build up a fierce kingside flank attack or break the center wide open.

But unlike other aggressive openings – you don’t compromise your pawn structure. Strike the perfect balance between safety and sharp aggression.

The Barry typically starts with the following move order:

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3

If Black allows, you’ll go for your ideal pawn center with e4 and a bishop on f4. Development is intuitive and all pieces go to their natural squares.

Most of the time, however, Black will play …d5, getting a position somewhat like the Jobava London, but with your knight on f3.

The Barry Attack used to be a specialty in the English chess circuit – most prominently championed by GM Mark Hebden. But in recent years, this gem has been uncovered by top contemporary players such as Magnus Carlsen and Liem Le Quang.

In the course, you begin by studying model games to get a grasp of the ideas – starting with the progenitors of the opening and moving on to modern examples.

💣Avoid mainline theory – get an easy-to-reach setup while avoiding the theory-heavy beasts such as the King’s Indian and the Grünfeld and take Black immediately out of their comfort zone

💣An aggressive f4 bishop when Black stakes a claim in the center (1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4) – Black may no longer obstruct the diagonal with …d6 and you can start your aggressive kingside flank attack

💣Drag Black into a Pirc if they avoid 3…d5 – achieving a perfect pawn center and play consistent with the mainline Barry by playing your bishop to f4 and ripping open the center

💣A hyper-aggressive alternative to the mainline (1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bf4 Bg7 5. Nb5) – a fashionable line where your knight jumps to make an immediate threat – for those looking to ramp up the pressure!
