The London System — A Low-Theory Repertoire for White

Most opening courses ask you to remember. This one asks you to understand.

The London has become a fixture at every level of chess — from club play to the practice of Carlsen, Ding Liren, Giri and Aronian — for a single reason: it offers White a sound, coherent system without the theoretical burden of the main d4 and e4 battlegrounds. You set up your pieces on familiar squares, you reach structures you know, and the game is decided by your grasp of the resulting middlegame rather than by who memorised one move deeper. That is precisely the appeal GM Ioannis Papaioannou builds the course around.

What the course is — and what it is not

This is a practical repertoire, not an encyclopaedia. In Papaioannou’s own words from the introduction, “concrete theory will be avoided as much as possible — our main focus lies on understanding the positions.” The aim is a system you can play with confidence in every game, reaching positions you recognise and know how to handle, rather than exhaustive coverage of every sideline that exists in the databases.

It is also honest about what the London offers. The opening does not promise White an advantage out of the opening, and the course does not pretend otherwise. What it promises instead is a low-maintenance, reliable system where understanding the structures and plans matters far more than recalling memorised lines — and where a well-prepared opponent’s theoretical knowledge counts for much less than usual. For the busy player who wants one trustworthy weapon with 1.d4, that is a more useful promise than a fragile claim to an edge.

How it is built

The repertoire is based on the move order 1.d4 followed by 2.Bf4, the natural London setup (the alternative 2.Nf3 and 3.Bf4 order is discussed, with its trade-offs explained). From there the material is organised by Black’s setup rather than by forcing variation, so that the same understanding carries across the many transpositions that arise.

Lecture 1 — Black setups with …e6, with or without an early …d5. This covers the main …d5, …e6, …Nf6, …Bd6 tabiya after 5.Nbd2, the Hedgehog setups with …b6, the structures with an early …c5, the …Nh5 tries against the f4-bishop, and the early …Qb6 lines.

Lecture 2 — Black setups with an early …d5 (without …e6) and setups with …g6. This includes the critical 2…c5 lines, the …Bf5 and …Bg4 development schemes, the …d5, …c5, …Nc6 structures, the King’s Indian-style …g6 setups, and the 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bf4 c5 move order.
