The Ruy Lopez for White, Part 1 — GM Arjun Kalyan’s Deferred Exchange

Most repertoires are built on a line the author fell in love with. This one is built on a line the author once ran from. As a Black player, GM Arjun Kalyan found the deferred exchange in the Ruy Lopez so persistently annoying that he eventually switched to the Arkhangelsk just to avoid facing it. Part 1 of his Ruy Lopez series takes that very discomfort and hands it to White.

The thread running through the whole course is timing. After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7, White captures with 6.Bxc6 — but precisely now, once the bishop has already committed to e7. Black would like nothing more than to recapture and reroute the bishop to d6; instead, it must spend a tempo to get there. The damaged queenside structure and the lasting pressure on e5 are the constants that every chapter returns to.

Why 7.Re1 is the heart of the repertoire

The choice that keeps the repertoire fresh is 7.Re1 — only the fourth most popular move in the position, appearing in roughly five percent of games. Opponents are on their own almost immediately, while White quietly defends e4 and retains the option of pushing d4 in a single move. Kalyan pairs it with 7.d3 for players who prefer a slower, piece-heavy struggle.

The course also reflects current top-level practice. The sideline 8.c3 entered Kalyan’s repertoire after Ganguly tried it at the World Cup, followed almost immediately by Lodici–Niemann — exactly the kind of low-profile, recently tested idea that rewards the better-prepared side. Against the move-order try 5…b5, he answers directly with 6.Bb3 Be7 7.d4.
